Known locally as Miss Margs, this trendy open-fronted restaurant combines the oomph and flavours of Mexico with Byron’s beach vibes. Choose from crispy snapper and mango or veggie garlic mushroom and zucchini burritos, among others.
Happy hour runs between 5 and 6 pm with mezcal and tequila sippers, as well as classic cocktails, margaritas, beer, and wine. Miss Margs is a local favourite and is often packed in summer, so be prepared to wait for a table.

Chihuahua Taqueria
Chihuahua Taqueria is a Byron Bay Mexican that packs a punch. Its tagline is ‘Tacos so authentic Donald Trump would build a wall around them’, and it’s not wrong – the flavours are authentic and the cooking is fresh and light. Portions, prices, and friendly service also get the thumbs up.
The menu revolves around its delicious taco range with a daily-changing specials board, while the jalapeño poppers and grilled corn sides are a highlight. And happily, with its new location on Byron Street, Chihuahua Taqueria offers plenty of seating and a full drinks menu.

Chupacabra
Chupacabra is a hidden gem located in Suffolk Park, about a ten-minute drive from Bryon. The restaurant’s fresh, clean décor has primary colours splashed on white walls to transport you to Mexico, finished with plenty of foliage.
The menu is made for sharing, with tacos and plates like chargrilled reef fish collars or crispy pork belly with agua sauce. Two spectacular sharing platters include Mexican surf and turf with rump steak, scallops, and mussels. When you’ve worked up a thirst, there are margaritas and refrescos – house flavoured sodas, as well as beer and wine.

OzyMex – takeaway only
Just back from Main Beach on Jonson Street, OzyMex is the perfect option for a quick fix after a day on the beach. Their no-nonsense menu consists of tacos, nachos, burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas, and gluten-free salads. Everything is offered with smoky sour cream and a choice of eight different chilli sauces made by Byron Bay Chilli Co., which range in heat from Mild House Salsa to the blow your head off Death by OzyMex.
Usually, you’ll find a few stools to sit inside, but OzyMex is predominantly a takeaway. Service is speedy and friendly, though, which is particularly handy in the summer months when everywhere else is busy with long wait times.
